Join us on Monday 15th July, to hear from automotive leaders how Semiconductor technology is critical to the future of the vehicle industry.
The way we drive is changing. From a growing Electric Vehicle (EV) market to Self-driving Autonomous Vehicles (AV's) , the industry is set for massive transformation. The success of these vehicles cannot be realized without Semiconductors.
Electric vehicles require twice the amount of chips compared to traditional vehicles, with new cars estimated to contain 3,000 chips. Chip shortages in 2021-2, were estimated to have prevented 8.2 million fewer cars being produced.
As the demand for EV and AV technology increases, so too must the UK’s Semiconductor capability.
Furthermore, one of the UK’s top three strengths as identified by the National Semiconductor Strategy, was Compound Semiconductors. These devices outperform Silicon in certain characteristics critical to EV’s. The ability to operate effectively at high temperatures, or greater power conversion to be used in power electronics for the battery. Increased energy efficiency also leads to an increased driver range within EV’s.
It’s not just the physical vehicle, modern cars include advanced sensor networks, cameras, and entertainment systems. All of these are dependent on increasingly advanced Semiconductor chips.
For the UK to remain a Science and Tech superpower, it will need to secure a strong ecosystem for its Semiconductor sector. But challenges remain for the UK’s semiconductor capability, threatening our ability to become a leader in the future of vehicles. This critical relationship between the Semiconductor and automotive industry must be supported, with collaboration between industry, government, and the tech sector.
On Thursday 27th June, we’ll be joined by sector experts to explore:
🚗How is the Semiconductor sector enabling the next generation of cars?
🌎Is the UK well positioned to become a leader in this sector?
👩🔬What is holding back the Semiconductor industry in meeting this demand for car chips?
🏢Can the recently announced National Semiconductor Institute help support this relationship?
