techUK responds to parliamentary inquiry into net zero and trade

techUK has submitted a response to the Energy Security and Net Zero Committee led inquiry which will assess how the UK could best use its trade policy to help meet net zero goals.

Some of the policy recommendations we put forward to the Committee include:

  • Reducing tariffs for digital technologies and hardware used in net zero solutions.
  • Integrating provisions for green and digital skills into mobility packages within trade agreements.
  • Organising trade missions to support the growth and expansion of clean tech start-ups and scale-ups.
  • Enhancing export finance support for clean tech companies.
  • Utilising trade agreements to achieve greener supply chains and foster business opportunities.
  • Issuing guidance on electronic trade documents for SMEs.
  • Advocating for the adoption of electronic trade documents by British embassies in their respective host countries.
  • Careful consideration of the potential impacts of introducing a UK CBAM on tech companies pivotal to achieving net zero, and adopting a pragmatic approach to exclusions.
  • Aligning the implementation timelines of the UK CBAM with those of the EU.

The responses submitted to the Energy Security and Net Zero Committee will inform a report assessing whether current UK trade policy aligns with emission reduction targets and exploring potential avenues for further progress towards achieving net zero emissions. Members will be updated about any developments.

HM Treasury and HMRC are currently consulting on the proposals for the design and administration of the UK CBAM. techUK will be responding, and members are welcome to share their views during a scoping call that will take place on Thursday 2 May between 1 and 2 PM. Please email Lucas Banach ([email protected]) if you would like to participate. For those unable to attend, input can be sent to Weronika Dorociak ([email protected]).
