UK SPF announces new Steering Board Member and Vice-Chair

The UK SPF is pleased to announce the appointment of a new Vice Chair and member of the Steering Board

The UK Spectrum Policy Forum (SPF) is pleased to announce the appointment of Theodoros Spathopoulos as the new Vice Chair of its Steering Board. This leadership change is set to further the Forum's strategic objectives, emphasizing the critical role of spectrum in driving the UK's economic growth and societal advancement.

Theo Spathopoulos is a Senior Specialist in Nokia’s Spectrum Standardisation team, is a seasoned expert in wireless communications. He actively leads Nokia’s participation in numerous regional and global spectrum regulatory discussions and has a rich portfolio of publications on broadband and 5G technologies.

With an impressive academic and professional background, Theo is well-equipped to spearhead the UK SPF’s initiatives. In his new role, he will direct the Forum’s engagement in pivotal spectrum policy debates, focusing on the future landscape of wireless connectivity in the UK.

The UK SPF Steering Board

We are also excited to announce that FarrPoint has joined the Steering Board as a new member. FarrPoint will bring valuable insights, particularly in discussions around space and satellite technologies, further enriching the Board’s expertise and strategic capabilities.

The Steering Board plays a crucial role in ensuring the effective organization, timely execution, and adequate resourcing of the Forum's activities while closely monitoring progress. With the addition of Theo, the Steering Board now consists of fifteen distinguished members, chaired by Luigi Ardito from Qualcomm.

The Board includes representatives from a wide array of spectrum-using organizations, senior government officials, and Ofcom. Current members include DSIT, MoD, Ofcom, BT, Everyone TV, Huawei, Nokia, FarrPoint, Plum Consulting, Qualcomm, Real Wireless, Samsung, Shure, Virgin Media O2, and Vodafone.

UK SPF Steering Board Role and Responsibilities

  • The Steering Board, supported by sponsoring companies, oversees the Forum’s operations, which encompass:
  • Identifying and commissioning expert advice on key priority issues.
  • Maintaining a strategic approach for the Spectrum Policy Forum.
  • Communicating coherent messages to the Government, Ofcom, and other key decision-makers.
  • Developing and managing the SPF work program to align with international agendas and influence spectrum management decisions.

Sophie Greaves

Head of Telecoms and Spectrum Policy, techUK

Sophie Greaves is Head of Programme for Communications Infrastructure and Services at techUK, and oversees the UK Spectrum Policy Forum.

Sophie was promoted to Head having been Programme Manager for Communications Infrastructure and Services, leading techUK's telecoms activities, engagement and policy development. Previously, Sophie was Programme Assistant across a variety of areas including the Broadband Stakeholder Group, Central Government, Financial Services and Communications Infrastructure programmes.

Prior to joining techUK, Sophie completed a masters in Film Studies at University College London; her dissertation examined US telecoms policy relating to net neutrality and content distribution.

Tales has a background in law and economics, with previous experience in the regulation of new technologies and infrastructure.

In the UK and Europe, he offered consultancy on intellectual property rights of cellular and IoT technologies and on the regulatory procedures at the ITU as a Global Fellow at the European Space Policy Institute (ESPI).

Tales has an LL.M in Law and Business by the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV) and an MSc in Regulation at the London School of Economics, with a specialization in Government and Law.
